As a former graduate of Bristol Community College, it saddens and frustrates me to learn they will be laying off more than 130 employees.
These are employees earning an income to support families. What is troublesome is

“Bristol was recently allocated $4.6 million in federal aid through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, which established a $14 billion Emergency Stabilization Fund for institutions of higher education.” As reported by SouthCoastToday.
After receiving such funding, you would think employees would have some security.

Here are some facts;
•Many of these employees worked directly with students.
•These employees were deemed essential at the beginning of the crisis.
•Part-time employees at BCC do not receive benefits (with very few exceptions) and also pay into their own retirement (no money from the state).
•BCC could pay those part-timers for 24 weeks for about $1.5 million, especially given the amount of money they recently received from the federal government.
