Boats Owned By 'The Codfather' Sink In New Bedford: Report

The fishing vessels "Dinah Jane" and "Nemesis" sank in New Bedford; the reported owner, Carlos Rafael, was recently sentenced to prison.

NEW BEDFORD, MA — Two fishing boats reportedly belonging to disgraced seafood mogul Carlos "The Codfather" Rafael sank in New Bedford Monday morning. The boats, the 65-foot "Dinah Jane" and 67-foot "Nemesis," were based in New Bedford and moored at Homer's Wharf when they sank sometime shortly before 1 a.m., according to the Coast Guard.

"New Bedford Fire Department personnel arrived first on scene and found the fishing vessels sunken and tied together," the Coast Guard said in a statement. "They observed a sheen around the sunken vessels, and placed containment boom to mitigate pollution."

The vessels had a combined fuel capacity of 9,500 gallons, the Coast Guard said.

South Coast Today reported the boats belong to Rafael, who in September was sentenced to 4 years in prison for running an overfishing and tax scheme. Rafael ran New Bedford-based Carlos Seafood, one of the largest commercial fishing operations in the country.
