Scanlon emerged in the lead in the 14th Bristol District race between two newcomers.

ATTLEBORO, MA — Democrat Adam Scanlon emerged in the lead in the 14th Bristol District race between two newcomers.
The 14th Bristol District encompasses parts of Attleboro, Mansfield and North Attleboro.
With the final tally waiting on two precincts in North Attleboro, Attleboro and Mansfield reported Scanlon in the lead with 53 percent of the vote.

This year's race has two newcomers facing off for Republican Betty Poirier's seat. Poirer, of North Attleboro, served for 11 terms but announced she is retiring.
The 14th Bristol District race is one of eight open seats in the House of Representatives. Six are currently occupied by Democrats — Poirier's seat is one of two occupied by Republicans.

Vying for the empty seat is Democrat Adam Scanlon and Republican John Simmons.
The primary election pulled out surprises on both sides as Scanlon won the Democratic primary by a thin margin, earning 50.9 percent of the vote.
Simmons joined the race after Republican D. Michael Lennox, who was running unopposed for the Republican nomination, announced he was withdrawing from the race due to health concerns and endorsed him.
