Former North Attleboro Man Charged With Murder In 2010 RI Killing

Jason Lopes, 33, was arrested in Texas, as prosecutors believe they are closer to uncovering a 10-year murder case.

PROVIDENCE, RI — A former North Attleboro man was indicted on a murder charge after prosecutors said he stabbed an Attleboro man to death outside a Providence bar in 2010.

Jason Lopes, 33, was arrested this week in Garland Texas after a warrant was issued for his arrest. According to the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office, Lopes killed Zackary Marshall 22, outside a bar on Peck Street on Dec. 18, 2010.

The case had gone unsolved for more than 10 years, but Steven M Paré, the Providence Commissioner of Public Safety, said Providence Det. Angelo A'Vant uncovered new evidence which led to Lopes' arrest.

"The arrest in this case is another example of the tireless work conducted by Providence Police Detectives every day," A'Vant said in a statement. "Providence Police will continue going forward in their efforts in solving cold cases such as this."

"The indictment in this case is a major step forward in our efforts to obtain justice for Mr. Marshall and his family," added Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha. "Ten years is a long time, and I recognize how difficult it has been for the family of Mr. Marshall to wait for this day to come. There is a distance on road to justice still to travel, but I am pleased that we have reached this point."
