Exhibit Details: In 2020 the Attleboro Arts Museum is partnering with organizers of Relay for Life of Greater Attleboro, a local fundraiser for the American Cancer Society that includes several hundred individuals from Attleboro, North Attleboro, Norton, Plainville and Rehoboth, among other towns and cities.
To help spread the word about this life-saving mission, the Attleboro Arts Museum will exhibit original, artful luminaria, paper lanterns created by artists in their own style and chosen medium. The exhibition, entitled “Luminaria,” will shine a light on the mission of the American Cancer Society, the strength of community collaboration, and the remarkable power of artistic expression.

Background: This year will be Relay for Life of Greater Attleboro’s 22nd anniversary. The event will be held June 12 -13, at Norton High School, in Norton. Representatives of the event will be on hand during both the exhibition’s Opening Reception and the Winter Night Festival to answer any questions.
The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is a fundraising event where members of a team take turns walking around a track or designated path. All Relay for Life events are staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,200 communities and 20 countries. 2020 marks Relay for Life’s 35th anniversary.
A Relay for Life typically spans from 6-24 hours in length. Participants rotate, walking throughout the event, to signify that cancer never sleeps. Everyone is welcome to join a Relay for Life by starting their own team or joining an existing one. Proceeds from all Relays help the American Cancer Society lead the fight for a world without cancer. When you attend a Relay event, you’ll see volumes of paper luminarias decorated with names and sometimes messages to the people they’re dedicated to. After dark, each luminaria is lit in remembrance of a life touched by cancer.
The formal kickoff for the 2020 Greater Attleboro Relay For Life will be held 6:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27 at Plainridge Park Casino on Route 1 in Plainville. The kickoff is free and open to anyone interested in joining or supporting this year's event
