After Fire, Back Bay Restaurant Reopens This Month

The Italian restaurant's reopening brings a new interior design, re-imagined menu and expanded craft cocktail offerings.

BOSTON, MA – After a damaging fire in October, Piattini is almost ready to reopen.

The Back Bay Italian restaurant's reopening brings a new interior design, re-imagined menu and expanded craft cocktail offerings.

The redesign, by owner Josephine Oliviero Megwa and Carlos Salib of SalibDesign, was described in a press release as "understated sophistication with Italian renaissance flair." It includes a multi-wall, "Da Vinci-inspired" mural, new wall and floor treatments, limestone and quartzite accents, and a remodeled, more spacious bar.

Its new menu emphasizes its standby small plates, plus full-size entrees through a rotating, seasonal menu. That includes fried eggplant with smoked mozzarella, sundried tomato cream sauce, and truffle oil; spinach gnocchi with tomato and house-made pesto cream sauce; fresh burrata-stuffed ravioli; homemade meatballs with pomodoro sauce; and lemon and basil fettuccini with steamed clams and white wine pepper brodo.

Its 226 Newbury Street building, which also houses an art gallery, took a serious hit after the fire broke out, with damage estimated by the Boston Fire Department at the time as totaling around $900,000.

In the press release, Megwa said being forced to close the restaurant's doors "broke our hearts."

"... but we’ve found an important silver lining as a result- the unending support of our loyal guests and fans," she said. "From texts and calls to visits to the restaurant space, we have been truly moved by our community and by those who have made us feel encouraged and uplifted throughout the remodeling process. We are looking forward to welcoming those guests, as well as new, back into our restaurant and hope they are as excited about the changes as we are.”
