Boston Prepares for Fourth of July Bash at the Hatch Shell
Upwards of 500,000 people are expected to flock to the Charles River Esplanade for the annual Independence Day celebration.

Boston city officials gathered Thursday morning to discuss this year’s plans for the 42nd Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular scheduled for the Fourth of July at the Hatch Shell.

As always, in his 20th year as conductor, Keith Lockhart will lead the renowned event alongside some very special guests.

It was announced Thursday that Lockhart will be joined in performance by Broadway star Micahel Cavanaugh, “American Idol” finalist Melinda Doolittle and Michelle Brooks-Thompson of “The Voice,” among others.
An extravagant fireworks display will illuminate the night sky before the event comes to a close.

David Wade and Lisa Hughes, of WBZ, will host a live three-hour broadcast from 8-11 p.m for those viewing at home. The event will also be broadcast on WBZ NewsRadio.
Police and emergency workers will be standing by throughout the day to provide any sort of assistance to those in need and to enforce a safe environment.
Spectators are urged to arrive early as space on the Esplanade will be at a premium. Gates will be opened a 9 a.m. Blankets and folding chairs may come in handy. 10x10 canopies are permitted.
Officials encourage those who plan on attending to bring sunscreen, bug spray, a hat and plenty of water. Single-handled coolers will be permitted inside. Liquids have to be carried in sealed clear plastic containers that can not exceed 2 liters in size. Glass containers and cans are not allowed.
No backpacks will be allowed inside. Small purses are subject to inspection. Personal items must be carried in clear bags.
Temperatures are expected to reach the mid 80s with sunny skies. Be sure to keep a close eye on the forecast as the day draws near.
Driving to the event is discouraged. Parking in the area will be at a premium. Lanes along Storrow Drive will begin to close on July 3. The MBTA will be running late service with free rides home after 9:30 p.m.
