Boston's New Superintendent of Schools Focused on Boosting Quality of Education

Tommy Chang announced 100-day plan that will focus on improving the school system in several ways.

New Boston Public Schools Superintendent Tommy Chang is working extremely hard to boost the overall quality of education students receive. He’s already derived a 100-day plan, which highlights several improvements, after starting on the job just a two weeks ago.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us, and I still have much listening and learning to do,” said Chang.

As part of the plan, an audit will be conducted on all high schools in Boston to determine which ones are teaching students the core curriculum standards.

Chang will look to establish a financial plan that works to stabilize the school district. His plan will also focus in on updating technology at high schools across the city.

“If we believe that every child, every student in Boston Public Schools, no matter their race, language, or ability-background, can live up to their full potential and achieve at high-levels, then we can and we will inspire excellence in every corner of our city to create a world-class education system,” Chang said.

The 100-day plan is set to begin on the first day of school on September 8 and is centered around five value statements:

  • All youth can and must achieve at high levels.
  • We innovate and transform teaching and learning to inspire excellence
  • Those closest to students must be empowered and held accountable for making the most critical decisions that lead to student achievement
  • Every child should have access to a high quality school of their choice close to home
  • We must build a “Culture of We” that is embraced by students, staff, families, and community

Chang begin working as superintendent on July 1.
