Five Things to Know Today: Tue, Feb. 8

Arianna Huffington at Patch, Tico opens on Wednesday, learn to mix cocktails for that someone special, not too late to run the Boston Marathon, fundraiser for Mike Ross.

1. AOL, the company behind Patch, acquired the Huffington Post. Founder Arianna Huffington, was named president and editor-in-chief of the newly formed Huffington Post Media Group. The two companies inked the $315 million deal Sunday, during half time of the Super Bowl. One can assume it was a special moment when when the Black Eyed Peas launched into "I Gotta Feeling." Seriously though, we'll see how this affects the online news industry. Here's what AOL has to say.

2. Tico, a new Latin American restaurant with an extensive tequila bar, at 222 Berkely St., where the longtime Cottonwood Café stood before shutting its doors in June. It's being run by celebrity chef and food aficionado Michael Schlow, who has appeared on numerous television programs including The Today Show and Top Chef Masters. I gotta feeling, Wednesday night is gonna be a good night...

3. Mix it up this Valentine's Day, with lessons from the Back Bay Social Club on how to make some impressive-sounding cocktails. Behind the bar concoctions include the Chocolate Raspberry Martini, Ruby Slipper, Pink Lady and Periodista. The class is Wednesday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10. A reservation isn't required, but space is limited so email RSVP@BackBaySocialClub.com to secure a spot.

4. It's not too late to run the Boston Marathon. (Which I'm doing for the American Liver Foundation -- shameless plug.) If you are one of the many that were unable to obtain a Boston Marathon number when registration filled up in record breaking time back in October, the Boston Living Center still has a few slots left. Visit their website to submit your application.

5. Sign up to support City Councilor Mike Ross. The fundraiser is on March 1 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the home of Robert Weintraub at The Residences at Mandarin Oriental Boston. Suggested donation: $75, $150 or $250, or make a contribution online at www.mikerossboston.com. To RSVP, contact Michele Messino or Mike's Committee Treasurer Susanne Lavoie.
