Hubway Gets Helmets: Vending Machine Coming to Copley

Since Hubway launched in 2011, the successful bike sharing system has struggled with one issue: How to provide helmets.

The city has had an issue finding a solution to a longstanding problem with Boston’s extremely popular Hubway bicycle share system: How would it provide helmets?

The Boston Globe reports that the solution will come in the form of helmet vending machines to be placed at the Boston Public Library Hubway station in Copley Square and three others this month.

The machines, produced by South Boston-based HelmetHub, will vend helmets for rent or purchase by credit card. The helmets will likely cost $2 to rent, and if a helmet is not returned within 24 hours, the user will be charged a fee of about $20 and will then own the helmet, according to the Globe.
