BOSTON — A man was shot and killed near the Prudential Center in Boston Tuesday morning during a rare daytime shooting in the city, authorities said. One person was taken into custody though police have not announced any charges. Police said the shooting happened just before 11 a.m. near the Colonnade Hotel.

"This is something we don't see in Boston," Mayor Marty Walsh said in a news conference after offering condolences to the victim's family. "We very rarely have a daytime shooting in the city of Boston. It's horrible and it's sad."

Parts of the Prudential Center and Copley Square were closed while police investigated. Both ramps for Interstate 90 east to the area were closed.

Police Commissioner William Gross said one person was in custody, but many details surrounding the shooting were still unknown.

People in the Prudential Tower reported hearing at least one gunshot and a number of people called police.

"The citizens of Boston are the ones who stepped up and helped us out," Gross said. He thanked witnesses and the people who came forward to call 911.

"We had Good Samaritans who engaged in heroic behavior," Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins told reporters.

The Orange Line experienced delays of at least 15 minutes due to police activity and state police warned of delays and detours for anyone trying to access the area or leave the area via I-90.

Police gathered video surveillance footage and witness statements and encouraged anyone with information to contact them.
