Three Things to Know Today, Dec. 2

1.  hosted by Mayor Thomas M. Menino,  is tonight. With live television, radio and web coverage, including MAGIC 106.7 FM, there's sure to be a large crowd as the city lights up the 50-foot, 50-year-old white spruce -- a traditional gift from Nova Scotia. Don't miss it. Boston Common, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

2. Local chef Joanne Chang, who owns Flour Bakery & Cafe, will be speaking at KitchenWares on Newbury Street and signing copies of her new cookbook, Flour: Spectacular Recipes from Boston's Bakery and Cafe.  With light refreshments and pastries made from her recipes, it's sure to be a treat.  KitchenWares, 215 Newbury Street, 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. Free but suggested $10 donation to benefit Rosie's Place.

3. Berklee and the Beatles are coming together, as some of the music school's top vocalists perform songs from Abbey Road. Performances will also include music by Usher, Janelle Monae, John Legend, and more during the college's annual Singers Showcase. With more than 100 students auditioning for a chance in the spotlight, the concert has featured alumnae Paula Cole, Lalah Hathaway, Susan Tedeschi, Gillian Welch, and American Idol contestant Ashley Rodriguez. This year's student performers include Erika Cole, Chad George, Naomi Gillies, Shayna Goldstein, Joelle James, Mario Jose, Hannah Juliano, Emily Miller, Mia Verdoorn, and David Wyatt. Berklee Performance Center, 136 Mass. Ave., tickets are $15 and $10 for reserved seating through ticketmaster.com or by calling 617.931.2000.
