Barnstable Students Returning To Classrooms Monday

Mayo Brown said cases in the school community declined this week, leading to a safe return.

BARNSTABLE, MA — Barnstable Public Schools will lreturn to in-person learning Monday after more than a week of remote classes brought on by rising coronavirus numbers.

Superintendent Meg-Mayo Brown sent a letter to families Thursday that said cases in the school community declined this week.

With the approval, students in kindergarten through grade 3 will return to five days of in-person learning for the first time this school year. This means those students would be on track with goals set by state Education Commissioner Jeffrey Riley to fully return to in-person learning by April 5.

Mayo-Brown said older elementary school students are not likely to hit that mark because of social distancing limitations. So Mayo-Brown requested a waiver to delay a full return for Barnstable United Elementary School students until April 26.

If Barnstable United Students were to return Monday, Mayo-Brown said the district would have to drop its social distancing requirements from 6 feet to 3 feet. Mayo-Brown said she will let Barnstable United students know about the waiver decision a soon as she gets an answer.
