Feds Move Forward To Replace Cape Cod Bridges

Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said the next steps are to design new Cape Cod bridges and decide how to finance them.

The 84-year-old bridges, which are the only way to cross the Cape Cod Canal by car, are estimated to cost about $1 billion.

BARNSTABLE, MA — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced it will move forward on replacing the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges. The 84-year-old bridges, which are the only way to cross the Cape Cod Canal by car, are estimated to cost about $1 billion.

The Corps approved the final report on the project Friday, according to the Cape Cod Times, and now agency officials said they need to design the new bridges and figure out how they will be financed. The money needed to replace the Sagamore and Bourne bridges was not included in President Donald Trump's fiscal 2021 budget or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' fiscal 2020 work plan.

In October 2019, the Army Corps presented a study that called for the two bridges to be replaced and argued it would be more cost-effective than repairing them.
