How Baker Lifting Mask Mandate Affects Barnstable Schools

See how the new state guidelines affect sports, outdoor activities, class time and riding the bus.

BARNSTABLE, MA — Gov. Charlie Baker ordered the mask mandate and other coronavirus restrictions to end May 29, but what does that mean for Falmouth Public Schools?

Although Baker's order still requires masks be worn inside schools, most school districts, including Falmouth, relaxed their mask mandates for outdoor activities.

Superintendent Meg Mayo-Brown said students and staff no longer need masks for recess, physical education and outdoor learning environments.

"Please note, we will continue to closely monitor COVID-19 data and if an increase in cases is noted or if any in-school transmission is suspected, this guideline will be subject to change," Mayo-Brown said in a statement.

The lifting of the mask mandate also affects outdoor high school sports. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association on Tuesday morning said it will follow new guidelines from the state's Executive Office of Energy and Environment Affairs and allow both competitors and fans of outdoor events to ditch the face masks as of Tuesday afternoon's contests.

The new rules apply to spring sports teams that play outdoors only. When indoors playing what are considered moderate- or high-risk sports because of close contact — such as boys volleyball — athletes, coaches, fans and officials must continue to mask up through the end of the school year. Indoor athletes in low-risk sports that can allow for 14 feet of distancing — such as gymnastics — do not need to wear masks while competing. All of Barnstable's spring sports are outdoors and won't be affected unless they practice inside.

Mayo-Brown said masks are also still required on school buses for students and staff. She also said all adults on school grounds need to wear a mask outdoors if 6 feet of social distancing can't be maintained. This includes staff and parents/guardians.

Mayo-Brown said students are welcome to continuing wearing masks outside if they feel more comfortable doing so. If parents or guardians prefer to have their child continue wearing a mask when outdoors, they are asked to contact their child's principal.
