Driver Alert: Longfellow Bridge Closed Tonight
Seemingly endless construction on the historic bridge entails an overnight closing from 11 p.m. Monday through 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 16-17.
Boston, MA - Build in a little extra time for your travels tonight, if you'd normally drive over the Longfellow Bridge.
The seemingly interminable revamp on the historic bridge entails an overnight closing from 11 p.m. Monday through 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 16-17. This allows the state Department of Transportation time to perform utility work on the bridge, according to an alert from MassDOT.
The Red Line's route will not be disrupted, and bikers, walkers, and runners will have access all night. On a personal note from this easily irritated cyclist: the left side of the bridge (when facing Cambridge) is for bikes and the right sidewalk is for pedestrian traffic.

If you, too, have pet peeves about the Longfellow construction, or just a few questions, MassDOT has scheduled two upcoming public information meetings:
- Tues., May 24, 6 p.m. – Multicultural Arts Center, Cambridge
- Wed., May 25, at 6 p.m. – Shriners Hospitals for Children (Auditorium), Boston
The meetings are meant to update the public on progress and discuss the next stage of the bridge's construction, which is expected to get underway in July.
