This April, our collection spotlight is a map of Boston and its surrounding suburbs, dating to 1905 and published by prolific Boston-based lithographer George H. Walker. One of the most notable aspects of this map is its orientation, which has Boston as a focal point but with the eastern part of the state in the foreground. From this vantage point, the viewer can easily see all of the Harbor Islands, and the coastline south to Nantasket Beach and Hull and north to Lynn Beach and Nahant. In the background, the map extends westward and shows the development of suburban towns and transportation lines outside of the city. And there’s even a small Wachusett Mountain out in the distance!
In addition to identifying important landmarks and locations, the map provides a good deal of additional illustrative details. Zoom in and make a close examination by accessing the map in DSpace.
