Good morning, Beacon Hill! Here are five things you need to know today, Tuesday, Aug. 6:

1. "THE JAPAN IDEA": Author William Hosley will be giving an "illustrated lecture" for his book "The Japan Idea: Art and Life in Victorian America" at the Otis House Museum at 141 Cambridge St. Monday night. The book deals with Commodore Matthew C. Perry, who was instrumental in opening the nation of Japan to the Western world. More info here.

2. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Get ready for a headache: The Red Line will be diverted by shuttle buses from Kendall/MIT to Park Street this coming weekend and four more weekends this year due to Longfellow Bridge work. More information here.

4. THIS DAY IN HISTORY: On this day in 1945, at 8:16 a.m. Japanese time, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world's first atom bomb, over the city of Hiroshima. Approximately 80,000 people are killed as a direct result of the blast, and another 35,000 are injured.
