Graduation and Prom Season Reminders for Parents
Important reminders for parents from Bedford's Prevention Services Coordinator.

BEDFORD, MA - It’s that time of year again – prom season, Memorial Day BBQs, graduation parties and summer is on the way. It’s a good time for parents to reinforce the importance of good decision making with their children and facilitate conversations often and regularly about potentially destructive choices.
Officials are reminding parents to take the time to talk with their children about the dangers involved with drinking alcohol and driving.
Make sure they know how dangerous it is to get into a vehicle with someone who has consumed alcohol, smoked marijuana, or used any other drug. Also, kids put themselves in danger of being a victim to someone else when they are impaired beyond the ability to defend themselves. As students head off to these celebrations, they should remember the decisions made before, during, and after the celebration can have long-term consequences.

Be a positive role model. As adults, we play a strong influencing role with our youth starting from an early age. Role modeling the behaviors we would expect is important. If you choose to drink, choose moderation, drink safely, and let someone who has not been drinking drive if you are celebrating away from home. For parents who aren't sure about whether your own alcohol use could be a problem, try a free and anonymous screening.
