MCC Graduate Transfers to State University with Scholarship Award

Ngoc Kim Chi Nguyen is MCC's recipient of the UMass Boston Foster Furculo Scholarship

With her education from Middlesex Community College, Ngoc Kim Chi Nguyen is ready to take on the “real world.” Nguyen came to the U.S. from BunMaThuot in Vietnam two years ago, hoping to continue her education and start her career. Now, the recent Middlesex 2021 graduate is preparing to transfer to the University of Massachusetts Boston with the UMass Boston Foster Furculo Scholarship.

“I am both honored and wholeheartedly appreciative to receive the Foster Furculo scholarship,” Nguyen said. “Without this aid, I would not have been able to achieve my academic goals.”

The scholarship was established in honor of Foster Furculo, a Massachusetts governor who served from 1957 to 1960 and played an important role in creating the Commonwealth’s community college system, according to Jane Fain, MCC’s Coordinator of Transfer Affairs. Because she is transferring from MCC, the scholarship covers Nguyen’s tuition and most mandatory fees at UMass Boston.

By taking advantage of MCC’s MassTransfer program, Nguyen made her education even more affordable and accessible. Fain calls the program a “smart choice” for students as they receive a high-quality education at MCC, make an easy transition to a Mass. state school or UMass campus, and save thousands in tuition costs.

“To help students, Massachusetts’ public colleges and universities have joined together to offer a variety of cost-saving transfer pathways to reduce the sticker price of a Mass. State University or UMass,” Fain said. “MCC helps you explore your MassTransfer options and choose the best pathway for your academic and professional future.”

Now living in Lowell, Nguyen chose Middlesex because she felt the college would offer her the most support. From the start, MCC helped set her up for success. When she had questions, her academic advisor guided her to a clear path. They also helped her establish goals and develop a direction from her studies in her major to her future career.

“My overall experience at Middlesex was truly unforgettable,” she said. “There are many support centers, faculty members, tutors and advisors who help students be successful. Their unwavering commitment to providing me with support helped me obtain my degree.”

As a Business Administration major, Nguyen also had professors who made a positive impact on her academic journey. Finding it difficult to name just one professor who has meant a lot to her, Nguyen said, “each have shaped my education and experience in a unique way.”

Through her coursework for her major, Nguyen feels prepared with a practical approach to take on business challenges and the tools she needs to achieve financial stability. Already working in her field since last summer, she has built up a solid foundation of knowledge and skills in Business from Middlesex. In the future, she looks forward to earning her bachelor’s degree and working in the Supply Chain Management field.

Through her studies and the support she received, Middlesex has provided Nguyen with opportunities for future academic, professional and personal success. She is also graduating with long-lasting friendships – something that is of even more importance because her family remains in Vietnam.

“MCC truly lived up to its promise of helping today’s students prepare for tomorrow’s challenges,” she said. “I consider my time at MCC as my most valuable experience in my journey to a rewarding career.”
