Police Issue Statement on Springs Brook Park Vandalism

Several park apparatuses - including the swing set and the bathhouse - were damaged on Saturday.

The following press release was issued by the Bedford Police Department:

BEDFORD -- Police Chief Robert Bongiorno and the Bedford Recreation Department are asking residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity or vandalism they see at Springs Brook Park, parts of which were vandalized over the weekend.

Police received a report of multiple acts of vandalism to the area on Sunday, June 7 that are believed to have occurred during the overnight hours on Saturday into Sunday. Vandals tore the dock off of the beach area and damaged sections of the fence. The swing set and exterior of the bath house were also damaged.

“The community should be aware that vandalism is a crime and those found responsible for any damage or destruction will be charged appropriately,” Chief Bongiorno said. “To combat this problem we are looking to the public to notify the police department anytime they suspect something out of the ordinary occurring at the park.”

The Bedford Police Department will also step up patrols in town parks, including Springs Brook.

Vandalism costs the town. Vandals struck Springs Brook Park last year, and a large percentage of Recreation Department employees’ time and resources were dedicated to the cleanup efforts.

“It is always an unfortunate situation to see our valued public park defaced,” said Amy Hamilton, Director Bedford Recreation. “Vandalism at Springs Brook Park has been an ongoing issue over the years and we hope with the community’s assistance those performing these acts will end.”

The Veterans Affairs Police will assist the Bedford Police Department with increasing patrol at the park. Residents are encouraged to call the police department if they hear noise or see flashlights at the park after 8:30 p.m. To report vandalism, call 781-275-1212 or dial 911.
