Bedford’s Citizen of the Year has been an annual tradition since 1979. The Citizen of the Year is chosen by a confidential committee, and is honored by riding in the Bedford Day parade, being celebrated at a reception coupled with the annual Bedford Minutemen Change of Command Ceremony, and participating in Pole Capping Day and the Bedford Common’s annual tree lighting.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there was no Citizen of the Year in 2020, but it is back for 2021! Nomination forms are now available and nominations must be received by Friday, August 6, 2021.
Please see the Citizen of the Year webpage (https://www.bedfordma.gov/town-manager/pages/citizen-of-the-year) for the nomination form, guidelines, and a list of past winners. Paper copies of the nomination form are available at Town Hall, the Council on Aging, and the Library.

Guidelines to be Considered:
Time spent and benefit resulting to the Town in general
- Can cover any time period
- Can be supported by additional letters or endorsement of others
Town affiliations and organizations
- A current resident of the Town of Bedford
- Experience with all Town organizations, including not-for-profit organizations or volunteer groups that benefit the Town
- Elected officials may not be selected while holding office
- Town employees’ honor may not be associated with their current position
- Prior services should be considered: either elected, voluntary, or appointed
- Town positions or committees
