BELMONT, MA — Belmont's Kathryn Bonfiglio was recently named a 2020 Commonwealth Heroine. Bonfiglio is the President of Belmont Against Racism, a community-action, all volunteer organization focused on addressing issues of racism and prejudice. Kathryn has been responsible for organizing many events around Belmont. She was recommended by State Rep. Dave Rogers.

The annual Commonwealth Heroines celebration recognizes women from across the state who "perform unheralded acts daily that make our homes, neighborhoods, cities and towns better places to live." State legislators are responsible for recommending women within their districts for the honor.

Bonfiglio has organized several events in Belmont including the annual Martin Luther King Breakfast, which raises money for the transportation budget for METCO students so that they can participate in more activities after school. She also serves on the Belmont Human Rights Commission, a Beyond Ferguson discussion group, and the Massachusetts Human Rights Coalition.

Bonfiglio told the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women, what brings her the most meaning is meeting inspiring people and helping them have their voices heard, and connecting people to ideas on contemporary and controversial topics.

"She believes when we see our common humanity, we can move to a more just world," the commission, which gives out the honor, wrote.
