High school-aged students can get a jumpstart on their college and career experiences with Middlesex Community College’s new Noncredit Career Exploration Summer Academies. Part of MCC’s College for Kids programming, the academies are taught by Middlesex faculty members. Students 14+ can have a productive summer by discovering their personality, skills, values and life goals through coursework, career mapping and research.

The academies match with MCC’s seven academic pathways – Arts and Humanities, Business, Education, Public Service, Social Science, Health and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

“We are so excited to debut our new noncredit academies this summer,” said Lauren Ellis, MCC’s Program Manager for Community Education & Training. “In addition to being taught by MCC faculty, students get hands-on exposure to college-level coursework and possible career options. This will help prepare them for choosing a college major that will one day lead to rewarding and successful career.”

Students in the Creative Writing Career Exploration academy are introduced to MCC’s creative writing concentration. Through journaling, fiction, nonfiction and poetry, students can improve their knowledge and skills and learn what it takes to get a job in the writing and publishing fields. The course will go from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays July 5 through July 16.

On the Lowell campus, students can participate in the 20th and 21st Century Music Career Exploration and learn more about MCC’s Performing Arts – Music concentration. From 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays July 6 through July 17, students will learn about job prospects and gain a better understanding of contemporary classical music and modern music theory concepts from the 1900s to today.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday July 12 through July 16, students can take the Engineering and CAD Career Exploration academy on MCC’s Bedford campus. Students will learn more about MCC’s Engineering and Computer Aided Design (CAD) concentrations by participating in hands-on circuit labs, 3-D printing, software programs and traditional lectures.
