'Ultra-Marathoner,' Recovering Addict Runs 24 Hours at Belmont High Track

BELMONT, MA – "Ultra" marathon is right. Henry Ward, a recovering addict turned man who runs distances most of us are out of breath just thinking about, completed a 24-hour, 85-mile run for charity Tuesday morning at Belmont High School.

That's more than three Boston Marathons. We'll let that sink in for a minute.

Ward plugged away at the Belmont High School track from 6 a.m. Monday morning to 6 a.m. Tuesday morning. According to CBS Boston, the runner first sought treatment for drug and alcohol addiction close to a decade ago.

Ward now runs to raise money for Runwell, an organization that encourages running and other healthy, physical activities to help people with recovery. His latest ultra-marathon raised money for scholarships for programs combatting addiction.

"It’s a long way to run, but I knew it’s a track run-slash-walk-slash-just-get-it-done," Ward told WBZ NewsRadio. "I didn’t have any mileage goals, just to finish it."
