Apple Pay Is Coming to the T

Come September, T riders will be able to purchase tickets using their mobile wallets.

BOSTON – Beginning in the fall, MBTA riders will be able to purchase commuter rail and ferry passes using Apple Pay, Boston Magazine reports.

The transaction will be available through the T's mTicket app, which launched in 2012. The app has accounted for more than a third of ticket purchases since London-based tech firm Masabi launched the product, generating more than $100 million in revenue.

mTicket currently allows users to buy weekly, one-way, round-trip and monthly passes for the commuter rail with their credit or debit cards. Come September, riders will be able to purchase tickets on the Android and iOS app using Apple Pay and MasterCard's MasterPass. Once purchased, riders can flash conductors their ticket on their screens through the app's "My Ticket" section.
