The MBTA is investigating after an employee was killed in what officials called "a terrible tragedy" at the transit agency's bus yard.
MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak didn't give details on the accident, but said an employee died after being taken to the hospital. Boston police said a pedestrian was hit by a bus shortly before 5 a.m. Monday.
"Obviously it's a terrible tragedy," Poftak told reporters at a rail safety event. "We will conduct a thorough investigation and make sure any safety issues are addressed."
Falmouth Street Could Lose Racist Scientist's Name
Residents have started a petition to change the name of a Woods Hole road after discovering the racist past of the influential scientist its named after.
Agassiz Road in Falmouth was named after Louis Agassiz, a 19th century geologist and biologist that taught at Harvard University. Agassiz founded the Anderson School for Natural History at Penikese Island, and his research inspired students at the school to establish the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole in 1888.
But Agassiz was also a polygenist, which means he argued all human races are of different ancestors and do not share a common ancestor. New light on his polygenism has prompted more than 600 petitioners to call for changing the street's name.
Warren, Markey Want Fore River Compressor Station To Be Halted
Massachusetts' two U.S. senators have come out in opposition to the gas compressor station being built on the banks of the Fore River.
In a letter to Enbridge CEO Al Monaco, U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Ed Markey and U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, all Democrats, called for Monaco to suspend operations on the 7,700-horsepower facility.
The compressor station is nearing completion, and Enbridge has filed a request with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to place the compressor station in service and have it operational by Oct. 1.
Residents and elected officials in Braintree, Hingham, Quincy and Weymouth have expressed concern and have opposed the project. There have been numerous protests outside the compressor station's constructions site and several arrests.
