DC Fugitive Held Without Bail in Boston

He was arrested after a series of disturbances Monday, including allegedly leaving an unattended item that sparked a bomb threat.

BOSTON, MA — A man suspected of assaulting an airport officer in Washington, DC, and arrested after allegedly leaving a Koran unattended outside a Massachusetts state office building, was arraigned Tuesday in Boston Municipal Court.

Aziz Rehman Osmani, believed to be homeless, was held without bail in connection to his DC charges, and ordered to undergo a competency hearing. He was arraigned on a fugitive from justice complaint stemming from arrest warrants issued after an alleged altercation at Reagan National Airport.

The District Attorney's office has been in touch with counterparts in DC, an office press release said, and officials there have agreed to take Osmani into custody after court proceedings wrap up in Boston.

Osmani, 22, reportedly caused a series of disturbances Monday—first in a fight with jewelers in Downtown Crossing, then by leaving a copy of the Muslim holy book on the steps of a state building near the Capitol, and finally by causing a disruption at a Boylston Street homeless shelter, where he was arrested, according to police allegations.

The incident at the state building, the McCormack Building on Beacon Hill, prompted a Massachusetts State Police bomb squad to perform a sweep of the area. Read more from Monday's report here.
