Esplanade Fourth of July Celebration to Continue Under Care of the Boston Pops

Founder and longtime producer David Mugar has "passed the baton" to the Boston Pops.

Boston, MA — When the last firework dimmed over the Esplanade this Fourth of July, much was left up in the air.

David Mugar, the longtime executive producer and financial force behind the annual Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, was set to retire. But it wasn't yet clear under whom, or if, the annual extravaganza would live on.

That doubt was put to rest Monday, as the Boston Pops announced they will be taking over production of the event, starting in 2017. The musical group, known for belting out the 1812 Overture beneath the fireworks, will take over management of Boston 4 Productions, which has produced the Independence Day event for the past 43 years.

"I am very pleased that the baton has been passed to the next generation," Mugar in a press release Monday. "The Pops will be outstanding stewards of a Boston tradition and I know for certain will lead the event into new chapters of success."

The annual pyrotechnic and symphonic tour de force draws thousands to the Esplanade's Hatch Shell, and is broadcast live to a national audience. Mugar founded the showcase along with Pops Conductor Arthur Fiedler.

The Boston Pops in a press release Monday pledged to carry on the tradition the two men established. Mugar, although retired, will remain on in an advisory role.

According to the press release, details about sponsorship and broadcast sponsors will be announced later this fall.
