Why This Isn't Just Another Heatwave: The HUB

Plus: A judge rules on Tsarnaev's lawsuit, but big decision is still to come. Plus, paying at the pump, and Facebook hits the trillion mark.

The HUB is a daily newsletter designed for what you want — to be caught up on the most interesting, important news in 5 minutes or less. It's a little bit of this, a little bit of that, but if there's something you want more or less of, email me at mike.carraggi@patch.com.

Today is Tuesday, June 29. Let's get started.

Yes, I know you know it's freakin' hot. But this is a special kind of hell out there.

Meteorologist David Epstein said at WBUR it's going to feel hotter than 100 degrees for most of Massachusetts throughout this heatwave. The heat advisory doesn't end until Wednesday night.

Sure, it's been hot before, Epstein writes (this time at The Boston Globe.) But he notes this is expected to be the hottest June on record, with the second-most 90-degree days (11) the month has ever seen. It's not necessarily indicative of how the rest of the summer will go, but the start to it has been pretty much historic.

The good news: The extreme heat is likely to break for the Fourth of July weekend.

The better news: You're not in Portland, OR, where all-time record temperatures soared to 115 degrees Monday.

Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokar Tsarnaev had some wins and losses in a lawsuit ranging from his confiscated baseball hat to the $2,300 he's got in a canteen account, The Boston Herald's Joe Dwinell writes. The Supreme Court is still scheduled to hear the appeal of his vacated death sentence in the fall.

Do you remember the last time you paid $3 for a gallon for gas? Some of you maybe already have, and the rest of you will soon. The average price for a gallon of gas in Massachusetts is up to $2.98 — a depressing 88 cents higher than this time last year, writes Michael P. Norton at State House News via WBUR.

The 28-year-old who authorities say shot and killed two people in Winthrop over the weekend had his pandemic wedding featured in The Boston Globe. A story last August detailed Nathan Allen and his fiancée's decision to get married at the West Boylston nursing home her grandfather lived.

A national look

  • The White House said President Biden would support an investigation into the devastating collapse of a condo building in Surfside, FL. The latest count is 10 dead, 151 unaccounted for. (Miami Herald)
  • Former President Trump roasted Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in the wake of reports that McConnell encouraged former Attorney General Bill Barr to publicly resist Trump's baseless claims of election fraud. (The Hill)
  • Hammer thrower Gwen Berry said she was "set up" when the national anthem played while she was on the podium at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials. Berry, who said she was "pissed," turned from the flag during the "The Star-Spangled Banner." (CNN)

A lighter touch

What I'm reading today: Man, it's nice to see that Zuckerberg guy get a break. CNBC has the latest feather in his hat of excess: Facebook is now a $1 trillion company.
