American Cancer Society Honors Braintree Relay For Life Leader

Susan Clawson was awarded with a Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Award for the New England Division of the American Cancer Society.

From the American Cancer Society: The American Cancer Society honored Susan Clawson of Braintree with a Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Award for the New England Division of the American Cancer Society. The award is the most honored accolade by the Society in New England, and it recognizes Clawson’s remarkable accomplishments in support of its mission to celebrate lives, to save lives and to lead the fight for a world without cancer.

More than a decade ago, Clawson began volunteering with Relay For Life after her employer, Braintree Cooperative Bank, became a sponsor of the Braintree, Milton, Randolph event. Since then, she has served as a team captain, a member of the Event Leadership Team and a member of the New England Relay Advisory Team facilitating regional trainings. Last September, she participated in the second annual Pulling For Hope of Boston, the distinctive plane pull fundraiser, as the team captain for Relayers On the Runway. This fall, Clawson became one of 17 individuals chosen nationally to participate in the American Cancer Society’s research grants peer review process for 2017, called Research Stakeholders.

“Susan is devoted, supportive and amazing; she is truly focused on doing what is best for the organization and working hard to cure cancer,” said Jean Martinho, senior director, community events, American Cancer Society. “During her years of volunteering, Susan has always been focused on raising more funds to invest into our Society’s patient services programs and research, all to support the mission of leading the fight for a world without cancer. Cancer doesn’t stand a chance if we continue to recruit new volunteers like Susan.”

The Sandra C. Labaree Volunteer Values Award is named in honor of the late Sandra C. Labaree, a long-time American Cancer Society volunteer from Maine. Despite her death from breast cancer in 2000, Labaree’s spirit and values live on through this award. Each year, the New England Division Board of Directors selects the most inspired and passionate individuals to receive this prestigious honor whose service best exemplifies the Society’s organizational values of mission, stewardship, diversity, data-driven, and respect.
