Annual Beautification Day Returns to Braintree

Braintree's Beautification Day takes place Saturday, May 7.

Braintree’s ninth, annual Beautification Day will be held Saturday, May 7 between 9 a.m. and noon. Mayor Joseph C. Sullivan, in conjunction with the Braintree Rotary Club and our event sponsors (Covanta SEMASS, L.P., Richmond’s Hardware, Paint and Rentals, Curry Hardware, East Braintree Civic Association, North Braintree Civic Association, Sustainable Braintree, MKE Development Corporation and Braintree Town Council) are asking residents, groups and organizations to step forward to help out with this beautification day effort.

“Our commitment will involve homeowners, businesses and numerous volunteers who’ll offer their time to help clean up our town. As a community pride effort we all can take three hours time to make a positive difference”, the mayor stated.

Public Works Acting Director Bob Campbell and Recreation/Community Events Director Nelson Chin are coordinating this year’s Beautification Day efforts. The day will begin at 8 a.m. at the town hall parking lot, where coffee and pastries will be available for the volunteers. T-shirts, gloves and trash bags will be distributed to volunteers while supplies last. A limited number of rakes, shovels, litter sticks and other landscape equipment will similarly be available for use, but volunteers are asked to bring their own rakes. Some town employees, town equipment and supplies will be at each of the targeted sites to work along with the volunteers. A cookout at Sunset Lake for all volunteers begins at noon to culminate the half day blitz within the town.

The targeted sites selected for the 2016 cleanup day are the Elder Affairs Building and Penniman Park, Smith Beach and Francis Toland Riverfront Walkway, town hall (including French’s Common), Thayer Library and Historical Society Properties, Granite Street at Town St. to Cameo Rd. (high school side only), Sunset Lake, Plain St. and Pond St. cemeteries and Monatiquot River at Pearl Plaza behind Shaw’s Supermarket.
