Braintree July 4 Fireworks Canceled, Celebration Goes Virtual

There won't be any public July 4 events in Braintree this year, but there is a virtual celebration. See other events happening nearby.

BRAINTREE, MA — July 4 events across the country will look different this year thanks to the coronavirus. Many cities and towns have been forced to cancel the annual Independence Day events, including Braintree.

Braintree canceled the traditional Braintree Day fireworks and parade back in May, but the town's parade committee is expecting to host one in 2021. Weymouth, Hingham and other nearby towns have also canceled parades and other July 4 festivities.

This year, Braintree Day will go virtual. The July 4th Celebration Committee wants to see residents' displays and decorations that show everything they love about Braintree and the United States.

"Let's show our pride for our country and community and that our resiliency will carry us through these difficult times," Committee member Sean Powers said.

Going through the Fourth of July weekend, residents are encouraged to take a picture of their holiday displays and post them to social media with the hashtag "BraintreeDay2020. Selfies sporting your pest red, white and blue attire are also welcome and strongly encouraged.

There is also one local event to watch: Although the Boston July 4 Fireworks show was canceled, the iconic Boston Pops will still hold a musical performance online. The event will air on Bloomberg Television, Bloomberg Radio, and Boston's WHDH-TV at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 4. Boston Pops Salute to Our Heroes will also be available to live stream at Bloomberg.com.
