Braintree High Wins National Contest Promoting Drug Free Life

BRAINTREE, MA — For the fifth year in a row, Braintree High School's Students Against Destructive Decisions club has won the National Red Ribbon Week photo contest, promoting a drug free lifestyle for all.

Typically, during the last week of October, the club participates in the annual event by decorating the school with messages about the drug free theme. There's a photo taken every year for a contest held by the National Family Partnership, a nonprofit working nationwide encouraging parents to play a role in drug prevention.

But because of the coronavirus pandemic, things were different this year, and the club was forced to get creative.

Braintree SADD advisor Kelly Sartre said she asked the students if they still wanted to find a way to compete in the contest this year despite the pandemic, but her students told her not entering was never an option. Winning the contest became what the students were known for, Sartre said, and there was no way they weren't going to try.

"Although this school year looks different for all of us, it makes me so happy to see that the Braintree High School SADD group still remains optimistic and enthusiastic about spreading the message of living drug free through the Red Ribbon Week Contest," Sartre said. "I am so proud of my students for all of their effort within SADD and for helping make this our fifth consecutive Red Ribbon Week Contest win! "
