BRAINTREE, MA — Before moving to Braintree, Jeremy Trier struggled with addiction to drugs and alcohol. Trier struggled for years to get sober, but after joing the Phoenix, a nonprofit group that helps addicts get clean with fitness, he's been sober for eight-and-a-half years.

On April 20, Trier, 39, will try to help others live a drug and alcohol-free life by running in the Boston Marathon as part of the Phoenix fundraising team.

"As a person in long-term recovery living a healthy lifestyle in mind, body and spirit are vitally important," Trier said on his GoFundMe page. "My life actually depends on it. So I considered my self very fortunate to have found The Phoenix as it provides all three! When I moved to the Boston area I didn't know many people and was looking to become more physically active. The Phoenix gave me both! This community has enabled me to become the very best version of myself. We strive to help and inspire others to do likewise."

This will be Trier's first time running the Boston Marathon and is Phoenix's second year with a marathon team. Zack Colclasure, of Milford, New Hampshire is also part of the team, and together, the two will try to raise a combined $25,000 for the organization. As of Monday afternoon, Trier has raised $6,858 of his individual goal of $15,000.

"The Phoenix is thrilled to have Jeremy and Zack participate as our second Boston Marathon team, Sydney Durand, New England Regional Director at The Phoenix said in a statement. "We are proud to be continuing our participation in this iconic event in Boston’s athletic community, while also raising awareness and support, and fighting the stigma that surrounds recovery."
