BRAINTREE, MA — District 2 Town Councilor Steven Sciascia will not seek re-election in the November town election.

Sciascia announced his decision not to run in a Facebook post on June 9.

"I believe that District 2 residents will always be served better by a resident and neighbor they trust than by somebody with political 'experience,' so it was never my intention to run for office again and again," Sciascia said in his post. "Refusing campaign contributions and not having to worry about re-election campaigns has helped me stay focused on listening to the residents."

In an interview, Sciascia said he was proud of the progress the town made on its affordable housing plan during his two years in office. He said he also enjoyed being part of the Braintree Master Plan Steering Committee and answering questions from his neighbors in District 2.

"That was the best part of the job. I loved helping residents who came to me with questions about the budget and zoning laws," Sciascia said. "Honestly, I'd love to do it again. I'm not not running because I don't want to do it. I believe what I said."

As for what's next for Sciascia, his exact plans aren't set in stone, but he said he'll remain involved in town government in some capacity.

Sciascia said he's still active with the Braintree Civic Association and will continue to be. And although he'll no longer be on the master plan steering committee, he expects he'll at least participate as a resident.
