Obituary: Vincent P. "Vinny" Joyce

Visiting hours for the town's former tax collector will take place Wednesday.

Vincent P. “Vinny” Joyce, a resident of Braintree for 56 years, originally from Dorchester, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, April 25, 2015 at the age of 85. Born and raised in Dorchester, Vinny graduated from Dorchester High School. He then went on to graduate from Bentley College with a degree in accounting. He was employed for over 30 years as an IRS Field Agent and later becoming the Tax Collector for the Town of Braintree. Vinny was a CPA and a member of the AICPA Institute. He also served as the Financial Officer for the American Legion Post #86 in Braintree, as well as serving as treasurer and trustee of the Devon Wood Condo Trust. He also served as treasurer of the IRS CPA Association of Boston for many years. An active member of the community of Braintree, Vinny was a Town Meeting member, member of the DAV, a baseball coach for the Braintree American Little League and Babe Ruth teams, where he was elected into the Little League Hall of Fame. He was Past President of the Braintree Men’s Club and an Usher at St. Clare Church for many years. Vinny also proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Vinny was married to the late Dorothy (O’Malley) Joyce who gave him six wonderful children; Peggy Duffy (Brendan) of Braintree, Kathy Strazzula (Phil) Of Scituate, Mary O’Loughlin (Frank) of Westerly, RI, Michael Joyce (Lisa) of Clifton Park, NY, Dotty Grace (John) of Franklin and Vinny Joyce (Kate) of Braintree. Brother of the late Thomas Joyce, Mary Byron, Catherine Cusick, John Joyce and Francis Joyce. Also survived by 18 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Reposing at the Cartwright-Venuti Funeral Home, 845 Washington St., Braintree, until 10:30 AM on Thursday, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 AM in St. Clare Church, 1244 Liberty St., Braintree. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Wednesday 4:00 – 8:00 PM. Burial will be in the Braintree Cemetery. In lieu flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Vincent’s name to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave., Boston, MA 02215. Vinny will be greatly missed by all those who were blessed to have known him.
