Preliminary information from the Norfolk County's District Attorney's office indicates that Braintree Police were called to a Liberty Street home near the intersection of East Division Street at approximately 1:20 a.m. for a domestic disturbance. Officers were informed that a resident of that address, male party in his 40s, had displayed a knife before leaving the residence.

Officers deployed a K-9 and located the party secreted beneath a motor vehicle outside a residence on the corner of Liberty and East Division. Initial information indicates that the man came out from under the vehicle brandishing a knife. The two Braintree officers on scene are said to have attempted to de-escalate the situation, deploying multiple revolutions of non-lethal measures, including shooting the suspect with a bean-bag gun. The subject continued to brandish the knife and was shot by police, the DA's office said.

Officers are said to have immediately began life-saving measures and the man was transported to nearby South Shore Hospital but he did not survive his injuries.

Police identified the man as Robert L. Dussourd, 44, of Liberty Street.

“We are very early in the investigation. Braintree police are being very cooperative, the Crime Scene Services Section and Ballistics Section of the State Police are assisting in processing the scene. The Medical Examiner will be conducting an autopsy, possibly as early as today,” District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey said. “The identity of the man will be released only after we have confirmed that the family notification process has been completed.”

Morrissey added that the investigation still has a long way to go.

“Every police shooting demands a full, deliberate and fair investigation and that is what we are doing here,” he said.
