#11 Cardinal Spellman Upset by #22 Canton In Softball, 5-4

Canton stopped a Cardinal Spellman rally in the seventh inning to clinch the upset win.

BROCKTON, MA- #11 Cardinal Spellman hosted the #22 Canton Bulldogs in the MIAA Softball Division II South Sectional Tournament Preliminary Round.

In the first inning, Spellman’s Chloe Kelly walked, stole two bases and scored on a RBI groundout by Emma Barnes to make it 1-0.

In the second inning, Spellman pitcher Ava Loud escaped trouble when Canton put two on base. Canton pitcher Sophia Santos also left two runners stranded with a pair of deep fly outs to left field.

In the third inning, Canton took the lead when Liz Beckett hit an inside-the-park home run when she drove home Sarah Kelly. But, Spellman struck back when Barnes hit a triple and then scored on a Julia McDonald single. The game was tied at two at the end of the third inning.

In the fourth inning, Canton scored three runs with two outs in the inning. Amanda Vrabel scored on a wild pitch and Steph Trendell drove in two runs on a single to make it 5-2.

In the fifth inning, Spellman pitcher Ava Loud got a 1-2-3 inning by not allowing any hits and then belted a solo home run to make it 5-3.

In the seventh inning, Spellman’s Julia McDonald reached on an error and Caseley DiMestico pinched-ran for McDonald and then was plated by Kaylee Palma to make it 5-4. But, Spellman could not tie it up when Santos struck out that batter with the tying runner on second base.

Cardinal Spellman will advance to #6 Plymouth South in which they will play on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
