In recent weeks, the Animal Control Department has responded to numerous calls involving sick skunks and raccoons. It appears an outbreak of Distemper is affecting wild animals in the City.

Distemper is a highly contagious and often fatal virus affecting skunks, raccoons, dogs, cats and other animals; humans are not affected. The disease targets respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts as well as the spinal cord and brain.

Symptoms include but are not limited to the following:

  • Eye inflammation
  • Eye/Nose discharge
  • Labored Breathing/Coughing
  • Vomiting and Diarrhea
  • Lethargy

If you see a wild animal exhibiting signs of being sick immediately contact the Animal Control Department (508-580-7835) or Police Department (508-941-0200). Do not approach or attempt to handle the animal. Also, ensure your pets are up to date with their vaccinations and supervised while outdoors.
