MA Native Nearly Throws No Hitter; Racist Tweets Revealed

Sunday was a day for varying emotions for Middleboro native and Atlanta Braves pitcher Sean Newcomb.

ATLANTA, GA — Middleboro native Sean Newcomb was one strike away from a no-hitter Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers when it was spoiled with a single by Chris Taylor. After leaving the field to a standing ovation, it was expected that the one-hit, eight-strikeout performance from Newcomb would be the talk of the game, but that was before his Twitter history was discovered.

Several tweets from Newcomb's high school years, including a rap lyric with racist language and homophobic content, were dug up Sunday. While the tweets have since been deleted, screenshots of the content have remained online. The tweets can be seen on Bleacher Report, but be warned that they contain graphic language.

Newcomb told reporters that he forgot about the tweets and became aware of them when he picked up his phone after the game.

"I just wanted to apologize for any insensitive material. It was a long time ago, six or seven years ago, saying some stupid stuff with friends. I know I've grown a lot since then. I didn't mean anything by it. It was just something stupid I did a long time ago, and I didn't mean anything by it, for sure," Newcomb said according to ESPN.

Newcomb wasn't the only player to get caught with old offensive tweets Sunday. Washington Nationals shortstop Trea Turner also apologized for offensive and embarrassing old tweets.
