Motorcyclist Killed By Drugged Driver With Child In Car: Police

A Whitman man will face charges for killing a person while operating under the influence of drugs with a child in the vehicle.

BRIDGEWATER, MA — A motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Route 18 in Bridgewater just before midday Thursday, police said.

Police and firefighters responded to the crash at 11:50 a.m. At the scene, responders found a Toyota and motorcycle that were involved in a crash. The motorcyclist, identified as 71-year-old Richard Silva of Brockton, was taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton where he was pronounced dead.

An initial investigation indicates that the driver of the sedan was traveling north on Route 18 when he allegedly crossed the center line and drove into the southbound lane of traffic in order to pass the vehicle in front of him. The motorcyclist was struck head-on as the sedan attempted to pass the vehicle.

The operator of the sedan, identified as 29-year-old Anthony Hathaway of Whitman, remained at the scene. He has been arrested and charged with drugged driving, motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of drugs, endangering a child while operating under the influence of drugs, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and marked lanes violation.

Hathaway was evaluated at a local hospital. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Brockton District Court Friday.

The crash is being investigated by the Bridgewater Police Department.
