Dr. Peter Moyer Honored by Friends of Brookline Public Health

Dr. Peter Moyer, a longtime Brookline resident and active member of Brookline's EMS Committee, will receive the 2010 Public Health Leadership Award given by the Friends of Brookline Public Health at their annual meeting Dec. 21, 2010, 6 - 7:30 p.m. in Hunneman Hall at the .

Dr. Peter Moyer has been a leader in the field of emergency medical care. Dr. Moyer served as the Program Director and Medical Director for Boston EMS. He established the first accredited training program in emergency medicine in Boston, known as the Research, Training, and Quality Improvement (RTQI) program; where he helped manage emergency protocols and trained personnel in new medical technologies. Dr. Moyer joined Boston City Hospital after working as a faculty member and director of pre-hospital training at Jacobi Hospital in New York.

Dr. Moyer has been committed to community outreach and educational initiatives, among them teaching CPR to Boston high school students; managing the Boston EMS Fellowship Program; and working on disaster and emergency preparedness training. In 2003 Boston honored Dr. Moyer's stepson, Manuel DelValle Jr., a firefighter in NYC who was killed on 9/11, by naming the DelValle Institute for Emergency Preparedness after him.Β

Dr. Moyer has served as Chair of Boston University School of Medicine's first academic department of emergency medicine, where he provided support for pre-hospital care, integrated public safety agencies, and implemented programs for automated defibrillation.

The Friends annual meeting will also include a presentation of the 2010 Carlin Community Health Award to two local organizations. Brookline 2010: A Community Climate Challenge will be recognized for raising awareness about the importance of reducing the carbon footprint of Brookline. Lovin' Spoonfuls will be acknowledged for their commitment in facilitating the recovery and distribution of perishable foods that would otherwise be wasted.Β  The town administrator, Mel Kleckner, will offer brief remarks and Richard Kelliher, the former town administrator for fifteen years, will receive the 2010 Appreciation Award.Β

A slate of officers and Board members will be elected, including Bruce Cohen (President), Rosalie Hermos and J.Jacques Carter (Co-Vice Presidents) and Amy Glynn (Clerk).
