Brookline Declares Snow Emergency, Parking Ban, Online School

BROOKLINE, MA — A storm is on the way, and the National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for much of New England, including Brookline.

On Monday, the town declared a snow emergency. Beginning at 6 p.m. cars cannot park on any public street, or they will be ticketed and towed. The ban will be in effect until 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Flurries began falling around noon Monday, but the heavy stuff started after 4 p.m. The town is expected to get up to a foot of snow overnight and into Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

"A winter storm will likely impact the region Monday and Monday night, with lingering effects into Tuesday and possibly Wednesday. Heavy snow, strong winds and coastal flooding are the main concerns," the weather service said.

The service said snow and rain was also likely to continue into Tuesday.

Forecasters anticipate high winds and the possibility of tree damage and power outages because of the heavy wet snow.

What to know

Snow emergency: The town has called an emergency. It is set to begin at 6 p.m. Monday and last until Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Generally, the Public Works Director calls a "snow emergency" when excessive amounts of snow are predicted. All cars are required to be removed from all roadways to allow for a better clearing job.

During a parking ban, there is no on-street parking permitted. Instead, officials ask that you park in municipal and school parking lots — or risk getting towed.

Trash collection Delay: The town asks that you watch where you place your trash and recycling barrels, so they don't get knocked over by plows Monday. There will be no refuse/recycling collection on Tuesday, Feb 2. Refuse and recycling collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.

Schools: Tuesday will be a remote learning day.

Generally, the school superintendent confers with the Public Works director about the road conditions and takes into consideration distances teachers have to come to get to school.

Power outages: So far, none reported.

Vaccine clinic disruptions: Monday was set to be the first day of appointments at Fenway Park, the vaccination officials are asking people with afternoon appointments to show up early.

"Once the snow stops, there will remain a significant amount of work," the town said in a statement. "Snow banks are pushed back to the curb line in order to provide for safe passage, adequate storage space for future storms, and parking. Please consider this timetable when clearing your driveway, front walkway, and sidewalks so that you are not disappointed when a snow plow passes by after the snow has stopped falling."

Monday —Snow before 11am, then snow, possibly mixed with rain. Patchy dense fog after 8am. High near 33. Breezy, with a northeast wind 9 to 14 mph increasing to 18 to 23 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.

Tonight —Rain, possibly mixed with snow. Patchy fog before midnight. Low around 33. Breezy, with a northeast wind 20 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 39 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Tuesday— Rain, possibly mixed with snow and sleet before 4pm, then a chance of rain, snow, freezing rain, and sleet. High near 35. North wind 10 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no snow and sleet accumulation expected.

Tuesday Night—A chance of rain, snow showers, and sleet before 7pm, then a chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 27. North wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Little or no snow and sleet accumulation expected.

Wednesday—A chance of snow showers, mainly before 8am. Cloudy, with a high near 35. Northwest wind around 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
