Storm Forces Schools to Cancel Afternoon Activities, Athletics

Town Hall offices, libraries and schools remain open; regular parking rules in effect.

The Brookline Schools have cancelled all afternoon and evening activities, including athletic events, for Jan. 18 as the town is buried by yet another winter storm.

All Brookline schools remain open and extended-day programs will stay open at all elementary schools until all students are picked up, according to an anouncement from the schools. Homework clubs and adult education classes are cancelled.

Meanwhile, all Town Hall offices and libraries also remain open and regular parking rules are in effect.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Brookline and much of southern New England last night, warning that the region could be hit with several inches of snow followed by sleet and freezing rain today.

Forecasters expected snow to start falling early this morning and change into rain by the afternoon. Brookline is expected to receive one to three inches of snow.

β€œRoad conditions will be deteriorating this morning and freezing rain will make things even more slick,” the service warned. β€œMotorists should drive slowly and allow extra time to reach their destinations.”

The service is also tracking another storm that could bring β€œseveral inches” of snow on Friday.
