Brookline Winter Storm Guide: Parking, Sidewalk Shoveling Rules

Don't get stuck with a fine. Follow this guide.

BROOKLINE, MA β€” For Brookline residents preparing for snowfall this weekend, there are number of factors to keep in mind, from when to have your sidewalks cleared to where to park, if you want to avoid a ticket or towed car.

Shoveling Sidewalks

Property owners are required to β€œmaintain sidewalks contiguous to their property in a non-slippery condition suitable for pedestrian travel by clearing all snow and ice from a pathway at least thirty-six (36) inches in width.” That applies to all single family homes, as well as residential buildings occupied with less than five families inside. If you want to avoid a $25-$100/day fine, get it done within 30 hours of the snowstorm's end. Are you a business owner? Apartment owner? Get it done within three hours or risk the fine.

Parking Ban

During a declared snow emergency/parking ban, there is NO on-street parking in the Town of Brookline. This includes all parking meters regardless of overnight parking permits.

Residents with permits to park overnight in Town-owned lots are not required to move their vehicles until 9 a.m. after the parking ban is lifted.

To report issues such as unplowed/icy streets or slippery sidewalks, you have options:
  • Call the Snow Emergency Line: 617-730-2610
  • Go to www.brooklinema.gov. Click on Report a Concern to report the snow issue.
  • Use your Smartphone. Download the BrookONline App. (See pg. 5 for details.)
