Some tips from MassDOT.

Submitted by MassDOT.

MassDOT encourages motorists to plan ahead for safe travel during the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend.Β

Heaviest Labor Day traffic on the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) is expectedΒ on ThursdayΒ andΒ FridayΒ westbound andΒ MondayΒ afternoon-evening eastbound.Β TheΒ FridayΒ before Labor Day 2012 was the 10thΒ busiest day on the Western Turnpike; commuters logged 350,531 transactions between Weston and the New York border. Motorists should also anticipate holiday weekend congestion to and from Cape Cod and points north.Β

β€œSafety should be part of all travelers plans this upcoming weekend,” said MassDOT Highway Administrator Frank DePaola. β€œMassDOT reminds drivers to always designate a sober driver and to limit distractions behind the wheel to increase safety for all roadway users.”

To accommodate travel, MassDOT is suspending all road and bridge construction on major roadways fromΒ noon on FridayΒ through start of normal businessΒ on Tuesday.Β

We invite you to check MassDOT statewideΒ live traffic camerasΒ before you travel and to consider downloading the free Ride Wise Smartphone application that provides users access to the real time traffic information on Interstate 93, sections of the Massachusetts Turnpike, Route 3 on the South Shore and Route 6/Mid-Cape Highway.Β

RideWise is now available on all major platforms - iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone.Β Free coffee will be served at the 18 service plazas along I-90 and other major state highwaysΒ on MondayΒ night, Sept.Β 2, fromΒ 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.Β

To save time, money and gas, please joinΒ E-ZPassΒ to avoid waiting in line at cash toll booths.Β The CapeFLYER weekend train service from Boston to Cape Cod will run aΒ Saturday/SundayΒ schedule on Monday, Sept. 2. Weekend train service from Boston to Cape Cod has also been extended through the Columbus Day holiday,Β Monday, Oct. 14.Β

Customers may buy tickets on-board the train or on their Smartphone via the MBTA’s β€œmTicket” mobile ticketing app for Commuter Rail. Customers are encouraged to buy their tickets in advance. Visit CapeFLYER on the web:Β http://capeflyer.com

TheΒ MBTAΒ service schedule for Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, follows: All subway trains, streetcars, buses, trackless trolleys, and commuter rail trains will run on aΒ SundayΒ schedule. Hingham boat service will not operate.Β
