Police Logs: Lots Of Reasons to Lock Up Your Bike

Dispatch reports for Aug. 9 – 12.

The following incident report is based on Brookline Police Department dispatch logs for Monday, Aug. 9, through Thursday, Aug. 12. Look for weekend incident reports each Monday and arrest logs each Tuesday on Brookline Patch.

Animal
  • A duck with a broken wing was reported on Monmouth Street on Aug. 12. A responding officer reported that the duck was OK and had flown away.
  • A woman was reportedly bitten by a dog on Cottage Street on Aug. 11.
  • Someone reported a cat "in distress" near Beacon and Amory streets on Aug. 9. The animal's collar indicated it belonged to someone on St. Paul Street.
Fraud
  • A Leverett Street resident reported that someone had "hijacked" their AOL account was sending requests for money to people in their contact list.
  • A Babcock Street resident reported that someone had stolen their credit card and used it to make purchases.
Burglary
  • On Aug. 12, someone contacted police to report a car burglary from several days earlier. The caller's Audi station wagon was reportedly broken into on Aug. 7 and a GPS unit taken. The car was reportedly unlocked at the time.
  • A Jamaica Road resident reported waking up around 9 a.m. on Aug. 9 to find their door ajar and a laptop missing. The caller had been home the entire night.
  • Someone reportedly sliced open the window screen of a vehicle on Brook Street and stole a Wii game console and games.
Theft
  • An alleged shoplifter reportedly fled on a 66 bus after stealing from the Walgreen's Pharmacy at 1324 Beacon St. on Aug. 11.
  • A bicycle was reportedly stolen from the front porch of a Summit Avenue home while the owner was at work on Aug. 11. The bike was reportedly secured with a cable lock at the time of the theft.
  • A second bike was stolen from a different Summit Avenue home, also on Aug. 11.
  • A specialized black mountain bike was stolen from in front of the Art Institute on Brookline Place on Aug. 10. The owner reported that the bike had been chained to a pole.
  • Two spoilers were reportedly stolen from a car parked on Columbia Street on Aug. 10.
  • Someone reportedly shoplifted shrimp from the Harvard Street Stop & Shop on Aug. 10.
  • A bike was reportedly stolen from in front of a Harvard Street building on the south side of Coolidge Corner on Aug. 9.
  • A van was reported stolen on Colchester Street on Aug. 9.
Hit and Run
  • A white van reportedly struck a taxi near Harvard Avenue and Harvard Street around 11 a.m. on Aug. 11 and fled toward Brookline Village.
  • A caller reported that her parked car was struck by a small beige car traveling eastbound on Beacon Street around 1 p.m. on Aug. 10.
Lost & Found
  • Someone reported that they'd lost their keys in a hallway on Homer Street on Aug. 12.
  • A passport was found on the sidewalk near Market and Washington streets in Brighton on Aug. 11.
  • A backpack was reportedly left near the entrance to a garage on Washington Street in Brookline Village on Aug. 11.
Misc.
  • A Parkway Road resident called police lat on Aug. 12 to report the smell of marijuana in her building.
  • A St. Paul Street resident called police on Aug. 12 to report that trash had been left in a stairwell for "days" and was a danger to public health. The caller was advised to have the trash removed.
  • On Aug. 10, police received reports of three teenagers on bicycles weaving in and out traffic on Beacon Street and intentionally causing driver to slam on their brakes to avoid striking them. Police caught up with the teens and arrested them on several charges, including disorderly conduct and receiving stolen property.
  • Police received a report of a woman on Jamaica and Highland roads standing in a field and yelling in the early hours of Aug. 10. One caller said they did not know what she was yelling about but that she did not appear to be in distress.
