The Last Week in Brookline: Aug. 16 to 22

Peeping Toms, unhinged drivers and other late-summer craziness.

Something about these late-summer days seems to have brought out the worst in Brookline.

We started the last week with more news about a guy arrested two weeks ago and charged with recording unsuspecting people in the nude, among other things. And if we weren't already creeped out enough, we learned about a second, totally unrelated Peeping Tom incident that took place 24 hours later on Beacon Street.

Then there was the guy who allegedly drove his Lexus through a crowded park in an apparent attempt mow down a bicyclist who had damaged his car, or the teens charged with disorderly conduct after they were seen riding their bikes in and out of traffic and deliberately forcing drivers to slam on their brakes. And don't forget the man arrested for drunk driving after he called 911 to ask for directions to the hospital.

But it wasn't all crime this week. In sports, the under-12 baseball team took the gold trophy to end their season, while the under-16 team was sent home empty handed. Away from Brookline, a Dexter School senior pitched a perfect inning at the All-American Baseball Classic in San Diego, while a Brookline High grad prepared to compete for a seat on the World Championship rowing team in New Jersey this weekend.

We also learned this week about a new restaurant and two fitness centers moving into Brookline this fall, as well as the town's plans to build new affordable housing in North Brookline and test out low-energy streetlights in South Brookline.
