The Last Week in Brookline: July 26 – Aug. 1

Tainted skeeters show up in town, election season heats up.

Brookline managed to keep itself busy the last few days, even as the final week of July faded into the summer.

The West Nile Virus showed up in town Friday, with two mosquitoes captured in South Brookline testing positive for the disease. Health officials are monitoring the progress of the disease and urging residents to avoid getting bitten.

Meanwhile, town planning officials learned more this week about a proposal to construct a four-story building on the site of a parking lot near Cleveland Circle, and a new plan that will preserve a 110-year-old home that had been marked for demolition. And we reported about interest in starting an indoor winter farmers market in Brookline

Election season began in earnest this week, with state senate candidate Charles Rudnick pounding pavement across town in his bid to unseat incumbent Cynthia Creem in the Democratic primary next month. Meanwhile, two candidates for state representative, Kelly Tynan and Matt Beneditti, wrote in to pontificate on national education standards and prescription plans for seniors.

And of course, Brookline police were kept busy as well, breaking up heroin deals and chasing after kids on stolen bikes.
